Frequently Asked Questions about the
Graduate Program in African American Studies

  1. Why study in the Department of African-American Studies (DAAS) at Temple University?
    The African presence/experience has shaped the social, political, economic, cultural, intellectual, and psychological landscape of the Americas and the world.  Study of the African experience from Temple's African-centered perspective helps students better understand the array of forces affecting local and global dynamics, and encourages and prepares students to make a positive difference in the world.
  2. What is the criteria for admission to the Graduate Program
    Master's admissions

  3. How is funding organized and how do I apply for funding?
    The Department offers a limited number of assistantships on a highly competitive basis. The awards usually involve teaching. Teaching Assistants receive a stipend and full tuition remission of up to 9 credits. The applicant must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better and strong letters of recommendation. A resume, writing sample, and/or syllabus are also required with the Teaching Assistantship application, which is obtained from the Graduate Secretary. Normally, awards are given to doctoral students who best meet the criteria.
  4. Are GRE scores required
    Yes. A GRE above 1000 is required for admission to any graduate program at Temple University. Exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances.
  5. What is the Normative Time for completion of the Graduate Program
    For MA is 2 years, for phD is 5-7.
  6. Is it possible to enroll in the Graduate Program part-time
    Most of the graduate level classes are offered after 5pm Monday through Friday, to accommadate for full-time work schedules. Students may also complete the degree on a part time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester) however the time-limit for completion remains the same (3 years for MA, 7 years for Phd).
