Graduate Program

The Department of African American Studies offers graduate work leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The M.A. program seeks to answer personal intellectual needs of the student and the particular needs of society that are not satisfied by a baccalaureate degree. Thus, the M.A. provides more specialized study in African American studies then the baccalaureate. The Ph.D. program is designed to insure that the student satisfies the highest standards of excellence in preparation for the highest achievement in active scholarship and research in African American Studies. Thus, a student is prepared for a lifetime of intellectual inquiry that may be manifested in creative scholarship or careers in social, academic, civil, or international settings.
