Faculty Senate Steering Committee

Attendance:  Karen M. Turner (Pres.), , Paul S. LaFollette (V. Pres.), Bonnie Averbach (Secy), Robert M. Aiken (Past-Pres), David A. Baron (Med), Z. Joan Delalic (Engr.), Margaret Devinney (CLA), Pauline Hurley-Kurtz (AMBL), Michael Jackson (STHM), Luke Kahlich (BCMD), Lois Millner (SSA), Mark C. Rahdert (Law), Charles Ruchalski (Pharm), Joan P. Shapiro (Educ),  Joel B. Sheffield (CST), Roberta Sloan (SCT), David Waldstreicher (Fac. Herald), Cheryl Mack (Coord)

 

1. Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.

 

2. Approval of Minutes:

The minutes of September 9 were amended, and then approved.

 

3. President’s Report (Turner): 

Members needed for Board of Trustee Committees:

Devinney and Millner volunteered to be on the Student Affairs Committee.

Stevens will be asked to be on the Facilities Committee.  Jackson volunteered to be backup.

Rahdert volunteered to be on the Development Committee.

We need to find out if Dubeck is still on the Budget and Finance Committee.

We need to clarify whether or not Betsy Leebron, now in administration, can be on the Athletics Committee.

 

4. Vice President’s Report (LaFollette):

We will be having elections soon.  LaFollette will discuss computer information with Sheri Stahler.

 

5. Guests:

Terry Halbert and Julie Phillips spoke about Gen Ed.  Among the topics discussed were the following:

  • Gen Ed will receive some team teaching grants and five grants for course buyouts
  • There will be some Provost teaching awards for innovative teaching.
  • Halbert discussed the basic threads of the overall topics covered in the Program.
  • Phillips is working on Assessment of the goals of the Program, which include critical thinking, analytical reading and writing, learning competencies. 

Halbert recommended that Lisa Rhodes join GEEC.  The FSSC voted unanimously to recommend that Rhodes be on the GEEC committee. The recommendation will now go to the Provost

There was mention of the CATES relative to Gen Ed. Aiken commented that there is now a new CATES committee, renamed Student Feedback Forms committee.

 

6. Comments on the September 15 Senate meeting.

The meeting was heard by faculty at the Ambler campus through audio conferencing with the use of Apreso. We hope to be connected to Health Sciences in the November meeting.
