Faculty Senate Steering Committee

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 1:15.

 

Approval of Minutes:

The minutes of May 13, 2008 were approved with additional material to be provided by President Turner.

 

Welcome to the new members:

David Waldstreicher, new editor of the Faculty Herald

Michael Jackson, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management

Lois Millner, School of Social Administration

Mark Rahdert, Beasley School of Law

Charles Ruchalski, School of Pharmacy

 

 

President’s Report: 

Turner suggested discussing goals and projects for the semester.  One major goal is to increase active participation in faculty governance.  Turner, LaFollette, and Averbach (and anyone else who volunteers) will attend collegial meetings.

 

Monthly Senate Meetings

President Ann Hart will be attending the 9/15/08 and the 5/8/09 senate meetings.  On 9/15 she will give an update on ‘over the summer’ issues as well as current issues.

Provost Lisa will be attending all of the Senate meetings and will continue ‘Ask Provost Lisa.’

Future Senate meetings will be hooked up to the Health Sciences and Ambler campuses.

 

September 9th meeting agenda

The guest speakers will be Provost Lisa, Art Hochner, and Roland Williams.  He will talk about the Committee on the Status of Faculty of Color.  Members want this ad-hoc committee to become a standing committee.

 

Some Future Guest Speakers are Diane Maleson, Betsy Leebron-Tutelman (Strategic Plan), and Terry Halbert (Gen Ed)

 

Vice President’s Report:

There are urgent issues involving Committees:  More committee members are needed.

Elected committees:  ‘Study Leaves’ needs 2 more members. (Personnel needs 1 or 2).

Appointed committees: ‘Student Affairs’ needs 8.

We have to make an effort to encourage faculty to be involved in governance.

 

Other Discussion

There was discussion on a salary questionnaire (by gender, race, and tenure track)

 

Waldstreicher would like faculty feedback about the Herald and would like faculty and administration to submit opinion pieces, discussions on research, faculty governance, issues of environment, intellectual property, safety, etc.

 

We discussed the possibility of inviting members of the Board of Trustees to our meetings.

 

Announcements:

Turner announced she has talked with the provost about a provost-hosted Welcome Breakfast for Senators/FSSC.  Turner said once the collegial assemblies contact the senate office with the names of all their senators, the planning for the event can be finalized.  Also, Turner will attend a dinner for new faculty/chair.
