1. Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 PM

2. Approval of Minutes:

The minutes from November 20th will be reviewed at the December 4th meeting.

3. Guest:

Our guest was Rhonda Brown, Associate Vice President of Multicultural Affairs.

She discussed the many facets of her position. Some of these which are handled by members of her group are:

    • Rhonda works on transactions of the Director of Business and Procurements to promote diversity among the persons doing the contract work for the University (construction, for example). She tries to recruit small businesses, when viable, to work on contracts, again to promote diversity.
    • There is a project to train people in the neighborhood to work as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, masons etc., to work as apprentices in the ongoing Temple construction, and to help prepare them to take the tests to be licensed.
    • Her group mentors the “Philadelphia Diamond Scholars”, a group of about 200 Temple freshmen who are from Philadelphia. These students are mentored towards success and retention, and leadership.
    • Her office also handles cases of harassment of any kind and social injustice.
    • The office is a resource for recruiting and working with people of color and gender. She works with new faculty to help them start research, retention, etc.

Rhonda’s office is located on the Lower Level of Mitten Hall, next to the Diamond Club.

4. President’s Report:

Bob Aiken requested that we submit more names of faculty who can attend President Hart’s afternoon meetings.

Cheryl Mack is in the process of gathering information for list serves for tenured faculty, non-tenured faculty and part time faculty.

The Focus Group:  We had a long discussion about the Focus Group Project that we participated in last week. We were unanimous in the decision to discuss our feelings with the Provost.

Academic Planning Committee: There was a discussion concerning whether “Ethics” should be a part of a “thread” woven throughout several committees, or should be the whole “piece of cloth” in one committee.

The president offered another reception at her home for faculty for December 5, 2007.

There was a question of who is allowed to attend senate meetings. The committee agreed that there no problem with having people other than faculty at senate meetings.
