1. Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 PM

2. Approval of Minutes:

The minutes were approved as distributed.

3. President's Report (Aiken):

CATA has submitted 10 names to the provost for her advisory committee to find a senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Affairs.

The provost is ready to receive faculty nominees for the search for a new dean of SSA.

We discussed possible guests and times for meeting with them. We do not want to meet over spring break.

The Academic Affairs committee of the Board of Trustees met and approved the move of Economics from FSBM to CLA.

We held some discussion about the minutes from the recent meeting of the Representative University Senate.  This discussion will continue next week.

We discussed the comments that came out of the recent Senate meeting about the motion to include NTT's as members of the Faculty Senate.

4. Guests:  Terry Halbert and Julie Phillips (Senior Coordinator of GenEd):

Halbert and Phillips presented the current development of plans for assessment of GenEd.

There was general agreement that they are off to a good start.  There was also some discussion about whether the current proposal appears to emphasize "scientific" thinking to the exclusion of more "right brained" virtues.

Averbach asked whether it would be possible to compare the assessment of students of our GenEd courses with that of those who get transfer credit for GenEd.

6. Second Guest:  Luke Kahlich - Commission on the Arts

Kahlich gave a complete and compelling discussion of the history and plans of Temple's Commission on the Arts.  This was followed by some discussion about how we might facilitate this organization’s goals.

Turner asked whether the Commission is involved in Temple's participation in the Avenue of the Arts.  Answer - yes.

Sheffield commented that at the moment the Commission's activities seem to be largely focused within the university.  He wondered if it would be possible to include some of Temple's activities in the coupon books given out to incoming students.

There was additional discussion about making student or faculty art projects available for use within the university.  Clark discussed some of the issues which such a program would have to consider.

7. Vice President's Report (Turner):

The election timeline remains on track.  The nominating committee's slate will be presented next week.

Averbach asked whether NTT's are permitted to apply for Senate Committees.

The answer is generally yes

8. Old Business:

Maleson said that she had received communication from a member of the Committee on the Status of Women saying that this member is very happy with the work the committee has accomplished this year.

9. New Business:

None

10. Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 PM
