Faculty Senate Steering Committee

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Attendance: Karen Turner (Vice-Chair), Paul LaFollette (CST), Robert Aiken (CST), Bonnie Averbach (FSBM), Zdenka Delalic (Eng), Diane Maleson (Law), Lois Millner (SSA), Ira Shapiro (STHM), Roy Stevens (Dental)

1. Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 12:51 PM.

Turner presided in Evans' absence.
Because of the time constraint imposed by a provostial candidate's meeting with the faculty, this was an abbreviated meeting.

2. Approval of Minutes:

The pleasure of approving the minutes from Feb. 13 was deferred.

3. Guest Presentation: Chairperson of GEEC (Terry Halbert)

Halbert announced that Gen Ed is at a "new juncture, thanks to an enlightened President." President Hart has been thoughtful about necessary organizational change. Within a week she will be endorsing a set of recommendations. These will deal with, among other things, "free electives" and organizational structure.

She asked for our comments about proposing Dan Tompkins as a replacement for a soon to open slot on the GEEC. We were generally in favor of this, although some concern was expressed about his ability to serve for only one year.

Halbert then expressed significant frustration with her ability to get the kind of administrative help she has been promised and adequate space to work in. This prompted the following two motions from I. Shapiro:

i) That the FSSC endorses the hiring of a TL6 level person to assist Halbert, and requests that this hiring be expedited.

ii) That the FSSC endorses Halbert's request for more appropriate office space. It would be particularly appropriate if such space could be found in the Tech Center. Again, this request needs to be expedited.

Both motions were passed unanimously.

4. Old Business:

All old business was deferred.

5. New Business:

All new business was deferred.

6. Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Paul S. LaFollette, Jr.
