The meeting was called to order by Mary Anne Gaffney at 2:05 pm.
The minutes of 2/23/09 were approved as read.
Chris Dennis introduced data on students taking a course more than once. The data included numbers of students taking a single course four or more times. Of approximately 37,000 students, 310 were enrolled in 352 courses four or more times. Of these students, 214 are in good standing; the rest are candidates for dismissal. CST accounts for 65 percent of these courses. The new Banner program may not be capable of managing unlimited course repeats. Bruce Conrad suggested that the university issue a policy permitting colleges to set the maximum number of times a student can take a course.
After discussion about the merits of a university-wide policy versus permitting colleges to set policy, Concetta moved that the EPPC recommend to the Provost that the university establish a policy stating that a student cannot repeat a course more than two times. The motion was seconded and passed with 8 for and 2 opposed.
Michele O’Connor introduced a discussion regarding the transfer of AP and IB courses. It is already the case that AP courses and IB courses have been approved as types of courses, but what remains to be decided is how these courses are used. She recommends that transfer be done course by course, with a decision to be made as to how the transferred course is applied to the Temple requirements. Moreover, each college must decide how these transferred courses are applied to its major and minor requirements. A motion was made and accepted that the AP and IB credit policies should continue.
Michelle also introduced the topic of transferring in military course credits. She will be distributing materials for the committee to read prior to the next meeting. We will need to decide on what credits will transfer in.
The meeting adjourned at 3:20 pm.
