Educational Policies and Procedures Committee
Minutes of December 10, 2007
Present: Bruce Conrad, Marge Devinney, Jane Evans, Mary Anne Gaffney (Chair), Terry Halbert, Phil Harris, Michele O'Connor, Jackie Resavage, K. Sadeghipour, Catherine Schifter, Concetta Stewart, and Karen Turner. Keith Gumery and Annette McMenamin Bakley, and Patti Vorndran were present as guests.
The meeting convened at 2:40 pm.
1. Approval of minutes of November 12, 2007 was postponed until later this meeting in order to expedite discussion of concerns of the guests.
2. Terry Halbert presented possible problems with the implementation of Mosaic, esp. concerning fairness to continuing students. Following discussion, the committee recommended a compromise: continuing students might opt for Mosaic or remain under their current system.
Discussion followed, including these issues:
- the extra GenEd credits might cost students more (e.g., writing courses at 4 credits)
- the increase from 3 credits to 4 will have no impact on policy
- CLA wants to switch over asap
- transfer and part-time students remain under CORE
- students will be notified via billboard on Portal that Summer 2 is the last term that Comp 50 will be available
- validity of the change
The committee voted in favor of the proposal ”GIG Recommendation: Complete and Instant Transition into Gen Ed Foundation,” with one opposing vote.
3. Halbert reported on the issue of C as the passing grade in GenEd courses (currently, C- is the standard).
- Jackie Resavage clarified why there must be a caveat for transfer students:
- transfer students come in under the C- rule, which we cannot change immediately
- transfers who are in the Core in Fall 2008, and later take GenEd, will have to continue under the C- rule until 2010, when the passing grade becomes C
- Discussion:
- the C requirement in GenEd would be out of step with other requirements (e.g., Core) that require only C-
- Terry will pass our discussion to the Provost and request a decision there
- another consideration: many partner schools have no +/- option.
4. Michele O’Connor reported on the following developments:
- Requirements for new transfers and current students who change their major in Fall 08
- transitional Core representatives have approved advisers’ changing the Bulletin Year for students to 2007
- Darwin gives students the choice of staying in the Core
- (advisers will need training)
- the Darwin option solves the problem: DARS can still be read, and exceptions can be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
- Progress report on core-to-core renewals: she has asked for input from community colleges about introducing a certification process for individual courses; has received no responses yet.
- New name and acronym for Core-to-Core Agreements: Transfer Educational Articulation for Seamless Entry = TEASE
- Progress report on dual admissions renewal
- working to include new factors
- to be signed within 30 credits at community college
- includes high school students who get AA degree along with high school diploma
- includes new programs to correct for articulation problems
- O’Connor will bring the agreement to our committee
Next meeting: 1/28/08
The meeting adjourned at 4:10 pm.
