Spring 2008 End of Semester Committee Report
Personnel Committee
The Faculty Senate Personnel Committee has essentially three functions.
1) Faculty members denied tenure or promotion may appeal the
decision to the Senate Personnel. This is true under the Faculty
Handbook and under the TAUP contract. During the past school year, the Personnel Committee received no appeals of denial of tenure or promotion.
2) Before the University may bring charges against certain faculty
members, the Faculty Senate Personnel Committee must undertake a
preliminary investigation and make a recommendation to the President
whether she should bring charges. If the President decides to bring
charges, the Personnel Committee appoints a five-member faculty Hearing Committee to report whether the charges are proven and, if so, what the penalty should be. Those faculty members who have the right to these procedures are defined in the Faculty Handbook, the TAUP contract, and procedures outlined in the by-laws of some colleges.
3) Under the Faculty Handbook, a faculty member may appeal to the
Faculty Senate Personnel Committee if he or she believes that his or her
rights as a faculty member have been violated. During the current
school year, the Personnel Committee received one such appeal. It was a very complicated appeal which has not yet been resolved.
