Senate Committee on the Status of Faculty of Color
May, 2008 Report by Roland Williams, Chair
During the past semester, we engaged in a number of activities with an aim to promote diversity and inclusion university-wide. In January, for instance, committee members were part of the Leadership Academy Diversity Panel. Then, in February at the Paley Library, we sponsored a “Chat in the Stacks” event on academic publishing. Subsequently, two of our members chaperoned diverse students who spent Spring Break in Pearlington, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana on ecological restoration projects. All of our efforts were bolstered by enthusiastic support from Provost Lisa Staiano-Coico.
As we see the university disposed by tradition to become a national leader in workplace diversity and inclusion, to help achieve the distinction, we plan to seek approval from the senate to convert our ad hoc committee into a standing faculty committee.
