Maintaining Your Non-Immigrant Student Status

Enrollment Requirements:

Graduate Students:  

  • Must enroll in and successfully complete no fewer than nine (9) credit hours each Fall and Spring semester.
  • You must report a change of address to the OIS within 10 days of the change. You must also change your address in Owlnet.
  • Must maintain a valid passport at all times - even if you have no plans to travel outside the U.S.  Your passport can never expire while you are in the U.S.. Contact your embassy with questions regarding extending your passport.
  • You are not required to register during the summer. You may do so if you wish, but U.S. C.I.S. regulations do not require it.
  • Graduate students on assistantship, fellowships, or externships may enroll in six (6) hours to meet requirement, as long as your department allows it. You must check with your department before you register for fewer than 9 semester hours for the Fall or Spring semester. 
  • There are very few reasons that a student would be permitted to drop below full-time status. Please review the information at http://www.temple.edu/ois/rcl.htm
  • Do not withdraw from any classes without speaking with an international student advisor FIRST.

Undergraduate Students:

I-20 Requirements

  • Report a change of level with 15 days of being admitted to a higher degree program within Temple University. Students who complete an undergraduate degree and begin a mater’s program must have an I-20 reflecting change of level with 15 days of beginning new program.
  • Report a change of major. You should request a new I-20 to reflect a change of major as soon as the change is approved by the University.
  • Report and document any changes in funding.

Employment Requirements

DO NOT WORK OFF-CAMPUS UNLESS YOU HAVE, IN YOUR POCESSION, WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION TO DO SO. This authorization will come from the U.S. C.I.S. or the OIS, depending on the type of employment authorization you were granted.
