F-1 EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS: AN OVERVIEW

In addition to on-campus employment there are four types of off campus employment for which international student are eligible. The table below describes the types of employment and the eligibility criteria you must meet in order to make an application.

As a reminder, you MAY NOT begin any type of employment until you have written authorization. This includes any orientations, training, etc in which you may be required to engage.

Purpose

Employment under the sponsorship of an international organization

Employment is due to unforeseen financial circumstances that happened after you obtained student Status

Employment is REQUIRED for:

you to complete your degree

To gain hands-on experience in your field of study

Timeline:

Application made to the USCIS. Takes 30-90 days  

Application made to the USCIS. Takes 30-90 days

If all eligibility requirements are met, you will be authorized for employment at the time of your appointment

Application made to the USCIS Takes 30-90 days

Provisions

If authorized, USCIS will issue an Employment Authorization Document. Employment authorization is automatically terminated if the student ceases to maintain lawful status. Employment must be under the sponsorship of an international organization

You cannot have given the Office of International Services Financial documentation indicating that you have sufficient funding within the last six months
