Structured Programs

The FGIS Department provides programs leading to an undergraduate major, minor, or certificate of language proficiency in French, German, Italian, and Russian. Programs are designed to provide comprehensive functional language skills, special preparation for the business and professional arenas, and a comprehensive understanding of literature and culture as a preparation for graduate studies. Students may also choose to complete a double major by combining one of the language programs with any of 100 other majors at Temple University, including business, management, communications, journalism, music, health professions, fine arts, social sciences, or engineering and science.


Study Abroad and International Perspectives

Students are encouraged to study abroad in Paris, Leipzig, the Universities of Hamburg and Tubingen in Germany, the Temple University campus in Rome, or on study abroad programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir or other Russian cities. Through the Office of International Programs students may also choose to enroll in study abroad programs sponsored by other universities or colleges.

Global Temple Conference

The FGIS Department encourages students to participate in the Annual Global Temple Conference.The conference highlights Temple student, staff and faculty research, programs and creative activities from around the world. Through panel discussions, poster sessions, films, performances and exhibits, the conference emphasizes three pillars of excellence: research scholarship, artistic creativity and community service.  For information about the conference, contact:

Creative Outlet

Students with a creative interest have the opportunity to work on Temple's literary magazine for World Languages, published annually.  For more information, contact Prof. Laura Spagnoli at or visit the website. In Other Words is Temple's first student literary magazine to feature original stories, poems, and essays written in languages other than English, with accompanying translations into English, as well as new English translations of work by other authors.  Every issue also includes pieces by more established contemporary writers working in languages other than English.
