Publications

Vani Dandolu, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, and residency program director of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the School of Medicine, published “Obstetric outcomes with a false-positive one-hour glucose challenge test by the Carpenter-Coustan criteria” in the May issue of the Journal of Maternal-fetal and Neonatal Medicine.

Ram Gopalan, marketing lecturer at the Fox School of Business, co-authored “Tactical locomotive fleet sizing for freight train operations,” in the May 2008 issue of Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review.

Mike Valenza, assistant professor of legal and real estate studies for the Fox School of Business, and Pamela Valenza, a Temple alumna and a student at Temple University Medical School, published "College Student Suicides: Liability for Administrative Policies” in the North East Journal of Legal Studies, in May 2008.

Presentations

Several members of the Center for Substance Abuse Research at the School of Medicine participated in an international conference on “Therapeutic Potential of the Cannabinoids: Present and Future,” held in Limassol, Cyprus, on May 1–4. Martin Adler, director of CSAR, was a member of the organizing committee and led a discussion on “Addiction and Cannabinoids.” Ronald Tuma, senior associate dean of education, G. H. Stewart professor of physiology and associate professor of neurosurgery at the School of Medicine, presented his work on “Modulation of the Endocannabinoid System as a Strategy to Modulate Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury.” Mary Abood, associate professor of anatomy and cell biology and associate professor at CSAR, presented a paper on “Therapeutic Potential of Cannabinoids in Amyelotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).” Toby Eisenstein, co-director of CSAR, presented a talk on “Beneficial and Detrimental Implications of Cannabinoid/Opioid Interactions on Immune Responses.” The conference explored the translational utility of cannabinoids, both natural products and newly synthesized compounds, in a variety of clinical conditions.

Enrique Hernandez, Abraham Roth Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine, lectured on the surgical management of endometrial cancer and on the conservative management of young women with endometrial cancer who want to conserve their fertility, at the sixth World Congress in Gynecologic and Breast Cancer, held May 27 through 30 in Toluca, Mexico.

Enrique Hernandez, Abraham Roth Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine, conducted a presentation on cervical cancer and was a visiting professor at the American British Cowdray Medical Center on May 30, in Mexico City.

Harold Klein, associate professor of general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, recently delivered a plenary talk and presentation, “The ‘Complex’ in the Mind's Eye,” at the interdisciplinary Understanding Complex Systems Symposium, which was held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on May 12 through 16.

Jim Lammendola, instructor of legal studies, and Mike Valenza, assistant professor of legal and real estate studies, both at the Fox School of Business, presented “Voluntary Real Estate Auctions: Understanding the Process and its Legal and Practical Pitfalls” at the annual conference of the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business, which was held in Cooperstown, N.Y., on May 3.

Ram Mudambi, professor and chair for general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, presented “The smile of value creation: Location and control in knowledge-intensive industries,” at the Nordic Workshop in International Business, held at Uppsala University in Sweden on May 29. On May 30, he was a Ph.D. opponent to Ciara Sutton at the Stockholm School of Economics, Nobel Hall, on the topic, “Foreign Indirect Investment in the Venture Capital Industry: A study of foreign limited partners’ impact on Venture Capital firms in Sweden.” Earlier this year, he acted as an expert commentator at the workshop on “Internationalization and externalization processes of international business operations” at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark on March 10-11.

Daniel Uzbelger-Feldman, assistant professor of endodontology at the Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, presented “Is it Time for Real Time? The use of Fluoroscopy in Endodontics,” at the Miami Masters Roots Summit, an international meeting for endodontic specialists, held May 29.

Jack VanDerhei, associate professor of risk, insurance, and healthcare management at the Fox School of Business, gave a presentation entitled “How are retirees managing today and the effect pension trends will have on future retirees” at the AARP’s “Completing the Retirement Equation: Making Savings Last a Lifetime” conference on May 14, in Washington, D.C.

Tracey Vlahovic, associate professor of podiatric medicine and orthopedics at the School of Podiatric Medicine, gave two lectures on May 18 at the Cherry Blossom Dermatology Seminar, which is the annual scientific meeting for the American Society for Podiatric Dermatology. She presented “Verruca Treatments & Advances in Topical Applications,” and “The Workup of ‘Itch.’”
