On Jan. 21, hundreds of Temple employees, students and members of the community gathered in the Student Center for an emotional memorial service (left) to conclude the university’s inaugural commemorative celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy.

Among the speakers sharing their reflections were President Ann Weaver Hart, Temple University Black Alumni Alliance President Tim Reece, Temple Trustee Judge Theodore A. McKee and Temple faculty members Charles Dumas and Rebecca T. Alpert.

The university’s celebration began on Saturday, Jan. 19, with the free screening of a documentary film about King at the Pearl Theatre at Avenue North.

On Monday, events on Main Campus included a screening of King’s "I Have a Dream" speech, discussion groups and community service opportunities in Kiva Auditorium (right).

“An annual day of community engagement and intellectual exploration honoring Dr. King's legacy is a natural extension of Temple's mission,” said President Hart. “I can think of no better way to begin the spring semester.”
